Who Is Maaike?

I’m a UX designer who loves turning frustrating experiences into simple, smooth solutions. I focus on understanding/researching what people actually need, organizing content logically and thoroughly, and designing a solution and supporting clean interfaces that just make sense.

My inspiration comes from everyday life, whether I’m discovering new places while travelling, listening to music, or staying physically active. That curious, energetic perspective is what keeps my design approach fresh, empathetic, verifiable and centered on real people.

Onderwijs2Go is an educational consultancy and training organization operating at the intersection of education and care. The brand focuses on empowering teachers and school teams by making complex skills, such as self-regulation, collaboration, and reading comprehension practical and applicable within daily educational practice.

Runity is an innovative social running app that brings runners together and motivates them to stay active. The app makes it easy to find running partners, plan group runs, get a safe start with a coach, and join an active community. Runity combines sports, guidance, and social interaction into a single user-friendly platform, developed with a strong focus on engagement, accessibility, and growth.

As part of this comprehensive project, I co-founded Runity to connect runners with one another.

Zien en Worden Gezien

In the digital age, we are constantly being watched, often without realizing it. Developed during a two-week sprint for the Mostly Human: Playful Interaction project, this installation explores modern digital surveillance by blending physical and digital media. As you watch a video inside the box, your eyes are live-projected onto the exterior wall for onlookers to see. Through clever camera feeds and shifting roles, the installation creates a subtly unsettling experience where the full mystery only unfolds once you watch the next person step inside.

Mission Zero

Mission Zero is committed to a sustainable, circular, and equitable society and economy, developing innovative solutions at the intersection of education, research, and practice.

The assignment was to investigate how sensory stimuli and biophilic design (nature elements) can contribute to reducing stress and enhancing well-being in a busy educational environment, such as the Atrium of The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Fire Department

This field study focuses on the subculture of volunteer firefighters, specifically examining their motivations, the impact on their daily lives, and how they mentally cope with incidents.

Team dynamics and communication under pressure were assessed through observation of an evening training session at the Kockengen fire station. Additionally, a semi-structured interview with an experienced firefighter provided insight into admission requirements, the internal feedback culture, the mental processing of intense situations, and the strong sense of camaraderie within the team.
